Iris completed the undergraduate program of Law and Business with Leiden University in 2013. Subsequently, she graduated from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 2014. During her studies in Rotterdam, she specialised in maritime law and completed the LLM Maritime & Transport Law.

After graduating, Iris worked with a law firm in Rotterdam specializing in transport & logistics, international trade and insurance and liability law. With this law firm, Iris worked on a variety of different cases in the firm’s practice areas. In the years before her departure she mainly focused on cases relating to bailment/storage, carriage by air, sea and road and cases relating to cargo damage arising during transport by domestic removal companies.

Iris joined Smallegange on 1 January 2020. With Smallegange, she mainly focuses on providing advice and litigating in cases of a marine nature, particularly maritime casualties, both on the sea and the inland waterways and issues relating thereto. In addition, she handles cargo claims (defense), contractual disputes and other transport and logistics related matters. She has a particular interest in cases with an international background. Iris represents inter alia shipowners, carriers, P&I Clubs, (hull) insurers and insurance brokers.

Iris is a member of the Dutch Transport Law Association (NVV), Association of Average Adjusters (AAA), Young Harbour Society (JHV), Dutch Association for Transport Lawyers (NVA) and Young Maritime Lawyers Association (YMLA).


Iris Regtien has registered the following principal (and secondary) legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister):

  • Transport and trade law

Based on this registration, she is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
